Privacy

No telemetry by default, no accounts, no analytics, no ads. This page lists everything smog sends anywhere, and when.

This website

The site is static pages. It sets no cookies and loads no analytics, trackers, ad scripts or third-party fonts. The only outside script is Cloudflare Turnstile, and only on the submit page.

Like every web server, ours sees your IP address, the page you asked for and your browser's user agent with each request. We use that for rate limiting and to stop abuse. Short-lived server logs may keep it briefly for debugging.

Cloudflare

smog.games is served through Cloudflare, which acts as our CDN and network provider and processes requests on our behalf. On the submit page, Cloudflare Turnstile checks that you are a person; it may set its own cookie and collect signals about your browser for that purpose, under Cloudflare's Turnstile privacy policy.

The submit form

When you submit a project we store what you typed: the link, the name, your notes and, if you gave it, your contact. Contact details are only used to ask about that submission and are never published. Submissions are kept so we can see what has already been suggested; email [email protected] to have yours deleted.

The launcher

By default the launcher sends nothing about you or your machine. It downloads:

  • the signed catalog from smog.games, at start and every six hours;
  • the files for entries you choose to install, from the creator's release page (usually GitHub) or from our mirror;
  • launcher updates from smog.games.

Those servers see your IP address like any download. The launcher reads your Steam library folders and Proton installs on your own disk to find what you own; that information stays on your computer. Files you supply, such as ROMs, are checked and copied locally and never uploaded.

Opt-in test reports

After playing an entry, you can choose to send a test report. Nothing is sent unless you press the button. A report contains exactly these fields:

  • the entry id and version;
  • whether it worked (yes or no);
  • your Linux distribution and kernel version;
  • your GPU model and driver version;
  • the Proton version used, if any;
  • the smog launcher version;
  • any notes you type yourself.

No account, name, username or hardware ID is attached. Entry pages only show the totals (how many reports said it worked, how many said it was broken).
